Painting of mother stretching to keep hold of a child’s hand. Mother is sinking into a purple pit. Bright blues and purples create a surreal world. Gold triangles accent the piece and move the eye around the canvas. This painting - titled “Stretch” - explores fear of separation from one’s child. A child becomes a unique individual, and the while the love between child and parent is strong, the child is called to venture off alone. Separating from the parent is both an uncomfortable and exciting transition. This painting is part of a new series of oil paintings that are helping me to process my own paradoxical feelings about motherhood, with its unbridled love, loss of freedom, and death of self.
