"How do I know that your art is even any good?"
Do you ever feel like you have to have a PhD in “art speak” to go to an art show or museum? If I’m being honest, sometimes I do too. Some artists rely on academic jargon to make themselves seem exceptionally thoughtful or smart. Other artists don’t give you any information and want you to come up with the “meaning” behind the work all on your own.
As you can tell from this site, I don’t do either of those things. I want to clearly communicate my intentions for my work as well as leave room for you to make your own interpretation. Having a fancy degree or a confusing artist statement or even a bunch of collectors clamoring to buy one’s work doesn’t make an artist’s work good.
I’ve spent over a decade immersed in art and art criticism. I can analyze who an artist is referencing and the level of skill they have with their materials. But technical skill or content or notoriety don’t necessarily mean a piece of art is good.
My one and only parameter for determining if a piece of art is good is simple. How does this piece of art make me feel?
Do I see my own life experience in it? Does it inspire me? Does it move me? Does it evoke a memory? Do I like how this piece of art makes me feel?
If any of these questions are a resounding “yes”, then I determine that piece of art is good. If I can’t answer a solid yes, then I categorize the piece as “interesting”. (Pro tip: the key to sounding like a reputable art collector is to always respond with “Interesting…”)
I hope this single parameter empowers you. YOU can determine if a piece of art is good as much as anyone else can.
If you still have questions about selecting or viewing or understanding art that I haven’t answered, feel free to reach out to me directly anytime at firstname.lastname@example.org. And if you know someone else who feels hesitant about determining what kind of art they like, forward this note along to them!
