Bio

CJ Howard is an artist, educator, and mother based in Winston-Salem, NC. With a Bachelor’s in Art History, she spent over a decade curating exhibitions in New York and North Carolina. In between her work as a curator and non-profit executive director, she would squeeze out bursts of creative output: a tapestry painting series about body dysmorphia, a global series of murals about globalization and interconnectedness, a salon style painting series inspired by goddesses around the world.

After juggling her career and art practice for over thirteen years, she experienced a postpartum psychotic break when her son was four months old. This wake up call motivated her to leave her career as an arts administrator and focus on her personal art-making practice. She has also used this career transition to further her education. She is nearly finished with her Masters in Communication from Liberty University.

Her paintings of women and children have been exhibited at Center for New Media & the Arts, ZieherSmith, SPARKCon, The Carrack Modern Art, Percy Bartley House, Durham Storefront Project, Golden Belt Studios, Power Plant Gallery, and AFAS Group. She has also been invited to create work as an artist-in-residence in Cape Town, South Africa; Hämeenkyrö, Finland; Beijing, China; and Durham, NC. She is currently a participating artist in the Artist Residency in Motherhood program.
