I’m CJ Howard, and I am an artist and parent based in North Carolina. With a Bachelor’s in Art History and a Master’s in Communication, I spent over a decade curating exhibitions in New York and North Carolina. In between my work as an arts organizer, I traveled to nine different countries to collaborate on artwork with other artist-activists.

Then, when my son was four months old, I experienced a postpartum psychotic break. This wake up call motivated my return to my personal art-making practice. Now, my greatest muse and guru — my toddler — and I make artwork together.

My paintings of women and children have been exhibited at Center for New Media & the Arts, ZieherSmith, SPARKCon, The Carrack Modern Art, Percy Bartley House, Durham Storefront Project, Golden Belt Studios, Power Plant Gallery, and AFAS Group. I have also been invited to create work as an artist-in-residence in Cape Town, South Africa; Hämeenkyrö, Finland; Beijing, China; and Durham, NC. I am currently a participating artist in the Artist Residency in Motherhood program.
